Clybourne Park Final

My illustration of Clybourne Park is all about a literal approach of the way the play was written. I want to it to tell evoke real emotion I want for the audience to feel like they are in this event and not just watching a story being told. I want this to has a realistic approach and for maybe when the audience to be able to leave the theater and say I know someone or even maybe they have gone though this and I really what them to connect if possible.

The theater choice that I want to make is to have it play right here in the Peabody in Daytona Beach, I know your probably wondering why here right in our backyard. The answer is that I want my target audience to be a middle age crowd to senior or veterans. But I love this location also because of it smaller size it will give more of an imitate feeling to the play.Florida is the best state for older crowds, I guess because the warmer weather. But I want this group of individuals because the first act takes place in 1959 and talks about a problem that was very big back then which was racism and also but brings up the Korean War.  So I feel that the older people can relate but not only that I feel that they can really feel connected to the emotions that Bev and Russ have to convene near the end of Act one when Russ begins to read Kenneth’s  suicide letter. And in the second Act the conservation flows with a more new age feeling but still brings up the factor of race.  Which the middle age generation can understand and find some relevance in the content but still understand the first Act. In all I feel that this audience will best appreciate the content and the unified vision in which it will be performed in making this my best choice in theater locations.

This helps to show how I want the stage set up with the
wooden stair case and the openness of the room.

This demonstrates the color and fabric I want to use.

The wanes coating is why I used this picture.

For the scenic design I want an open feeling with a  moving and somewhat abandonment. In Act 1 I want a clean but disorganized  look meaning  nice white walls but boxes all spread around the stage. Not a lot of furniture a kitchen table, four matching chairs, moving boxes dispersed around the stage,  a the wanes coating on the bottom half of the walls, with all the wood fixtures to have a rich oak color to them. Then in Act 2 I want the major sense of feeling to be abandonment with dust  and cob webs all around. I want for the furniture that the characters to be sitting on to resemble milk crates. I want the walls to have paint peeling and a dirty effect around.

The lighting in Act 1 I want to be almost a simulation of daylight shining in on a living room through large bay windows with white satin curtains that are faded in spots draped over them. I want a bright uplifting light for the bringing of the Act and when Karl shows up I want it to look like there are clouds rolling by outside affecting the lighting making it slightly darker or dimmer. This is to almost hint or to show a sense of how when Karl shows up that he will be bringing problems. Then when Russ explodes and loses his temper I want it to look like there is a storm outside and the light shining in now has change from a sunny happy mood to a gray filter of that white light which will help to show anger but also carry so sadness with it. To open this Act the house lights will dim to a pre lit stage and to close it, the stage light will slowly dim as if almost to say goodbye to the past.
The way the picture is lit up by the sun is the warm feeling I
from the beginning of Act 1.
This will be the source of light from the
Acts in the play.
This picture is to show how the lighting will be towards the end of the play to help portray the anger and sorrow from those ending scenes.
Now for Act 2 I want it to start the house lights will dim down to a dark stage that will slowly light up to show a stage of actors. I want for it to have a sepia tone with an almost orange glow like you would get for a sunset. And I want for this to stay the lighting for the whole thing that is until Dan reads the letter at the end then I want a spot light him and a dim dusty white lights on Bev and the other actors to help create the flashback. Then to finish I want an abrupt shut off of the lights to take you back to reality signaling fin the end.
This is showing the color I want the lighting to be in the
throughout the second Act.
This is for at the end when Dan is reading
Kennith's letter. This spot light will help create
the flashback for that moment.

For the costume design I feel it help me to select a cast for the play in order of characters
Russ: Clarke Gable
 Bev: Tippi Hedren

Francine: Kimberly Elise

Jim: Jake Gyllenhaal

Albert: Shemar Moore

Karl:  James Wood

Besty: Jayma Mays

Now when I cast these actors it helped motive me for the clothing design I wanted cotton dresses on the woman Francine in a maid outfit. The men Russ and Albert will be wearing cotton button up plaid short shelve shirts for a more relaxed look but Jim and Karl with be in long sleeve button up shirt with a blazer or sports coat. The woman will have bright and vivid colors to show their happy personalities while the men rich deep navy blues and dark charcoals to show their masculine side.Like the ones depicted in the picture below it flows I think very well for the way I want the show to come out in Act 1.
In all of the clothing pictures they help to represent the style, color, and fabic that
each individual will wear to help ease their mission of becoming that actor or actress needed to
play their part effectively.

Now for Act 2 the guide line for the clothing will be a more up to date feeling but with sophistication . So the woman again will be wearing brighter light colored clothing and the material will be cotton based only because it is a comfortable and easy to move in. The men will be in dark colors yet again it just shows masculinity. But sophistication is the feeling I am trying to produce by dressing them so proper I want the audience to  feel a shock when all the charters start to bicker like children near the end of the act.

I want to have all the sounds mimic everyday life. Just like I explained in my vision so I don't want crazy sounds or effects so the play will not have much sounds other than doorbells and doors slamming.  But to set the mood and place a time on Act 1 I would like this song "Come on Let's go" by Ritchie Valens to be playing just for a minute or to a minute in a half when the house lights go out at the beginning of the of the Act and the song will play once more near the end when Russ turns the radio back on.

The chorus of this song will open Act 2. I want for the audience to feel the time/ year change bringing it up to date and for it to have a hidden message of togetherness and kindness not what is going to be exposed in Act 2. The only other sound you will hear is again doorbells walking. I want a realistic approach so there fore there will be unnecessary music.

Reasons to be Pretty

Script Analysis

1. Identify the MAJOR CONFLICT of the play. This is between two characters or a character and a group of characters or force.

The major conflict of the play was between Greg and Steph all because Greg decided to open his mouth and say something without thinking one night after a few beers in a friend’s garage.

2. Identify what these characters REPRESENT.

Greg – laid back, calm               Steph- tense, insecure

3. Identify the TURNING POINT of the major conflict. This is the point of no return. At this point in the story the protagonist and the antagonist are destined to reach the climax of the story.

The turning point I feel was when Steph and Greg met at the mall and Greg had brought flowers and was trying to be nice to win Steph back. While the whole time Steph was mad, but when Steph pulled out a list she had made of all Greg’s flaws and read it aloud to the mall she destroys what little love he had left for her.

4. Identify the CLIMAX of the major conflict. This is the height of the conflict. There is no where else for it to go and it breaks open, explodes, or dies. Be as specific as possible. Write the scene number and describe the specific moment.

The climax of the play was when Steph ended up bumping into Greg at the restaurant where Steph was on a date and Greg was going to meet Kent and Chrissie the girl who he was cheating on his wife Carly with who is Steph’s best friend. Well it is here that Steph tries to ask if he is meeting a girl and when he tells her no and asks her the same she tries to dodge the question but it comes out and then an argument and Steph then slaps Greg across his face which is the last straw and now she has moved on.

5. Identify the RESOLUTION of the conflict. The conflict comes to a conclusion. Be as specific as possible. Write the scene number and describe the specific moment.

Is when Steph goes to Greg job to tell him that she is engaged but she also had an alerter motive as well she came to tell him that when ever she talks to her fiance that she just keeps pictures Greg and not him but her head tells her to forget it but her heart is torn.

6. Identify the FINAL ACTIONS of the two figures involved in the major conflict. Then explain its significance.

Greg:  Sigh and lays down on the couch in the break room at his job. He hears the buzzer for his break to over and he then flips the bird in the air. He realizes that the woman he still has feeling for has really moved on and he lost.

Steph: Hugs Greg and starts to cry and then pulls away and tries to hide her tears and basically runs off the stage. She knows in her heart that she still loves Greg but in head the best thing is Jeff her future husband. And it leaves her emotionally torn between the two but she doesn’t pick Greg.

7. Identify each of the characters' (in the major conflict) over all OBJECTIVES. This is a want that drives them all the way through the play. Keep this active and playable for an actor. Think of action verbs.

Greg wants  ordinary. Steph  wants  extraordinary.

8. Identify the SUBJECT of the play. Force yourself to one word.

The subject of Reason to be Pretty is about insecurity .

9. Identify the IDEA of the play.

In my opinion the idea of the play is that women are a blessing and a curse. That no matter how much you may love a person words can hurt and even destroy a relationship. And the saying should be sticks and stones make break my bones but words do hurt me too.

10. Write a short paragraph, 75 to 100 words that describes what the play is ABOUT to you and what it conveys. This is your interpretation of the over all meaning of the play FOR YOU.

The overall meaning of the play for me I feel it close to home for me all little because I’m sorry but all men I feel open there mouth a little too much when they get a few drinks in them. And it is hurtful and can make you second guess yourself when the person who you love and they tell you every day that they love you as well can be so harsh and do something as rash as to compare you to another woman. But yet he rarely complements you, so why it that he can be so quick to compare.

Almost, Maine

When I went and saw the play Almost, Maine there were a few a differences I realized when you see a live performance as in a play and from when you watch a prerecorded event or movie. But there is few of the same aspects because some of the elements needed in a live performance rather are live performer, live audience, and designated time and space. But the differences in movies are the facts the performers are not live. One difference is the atmosphere when you arrive at a theater for a live performance you are excited, energized and anxious. When you get to your seat you cannot wait for have butterflies in stomach even though you’re not the who is acting you know you can never know what exactly will happen when you see a live performance there is no way to see the exact same performance do to the live aspect of the play. Now at the play Almost, Maine by John Cariani it is a story that takes place in Maine in a somewhat of a small almost town like place. Therefore the place it takes place is call Almost because they refuse to come together to call themselves a town so Almost comes them almost being a town. There is a series of eight short scenes that make up the play which all take places on the same day I believe it is January 21 at 9:30 p.m. The stories are not really linked other than the fact it all happens in the same town Almost. Most of the scenes are about people who just meet falling in love, and friend’s finally confessing true love. In scene 1: Her Heart it is about a woman with an artificial heart coming to see the northern lights in Maine because she believes she can goodbye to late husband. In this scene Glory the actress is over animated and not very convening she makes you aware that you are watching a performance. A difference from movies is the fact that you get to see the stage getting set for the next scene it is experience you can only get from a live performance. In scene 4: Getting I Back when Gayle was arguing with Dave about having a the love she ever gave back she sits at the table says a few lines and get up but when she does the chair she was sitting in falls to the floor by accident Dave with an awkward facial expressions picks up the chair all while staying character. While in scene 6: They Fell when the performers where trying to kick the beer cans off the stage Randy one the performers kicked one of the a little too hard and it went off stage and almost hit an audience member in the leg. But Randy stayed in charter and continued with the scene but that is only something you can see in a live performance because it was an accident. This is just a few examples in the play Almost, Maine of real moments that distingue theater from a prerecorded movie.

Storytellers

A peasant telling his masters children about the mysteries the savage ocean holds.

Storytellers are part of variety entertainers. Storytellers can be found in mostly every culture worldwide and is past down from generation to generation. Stories have been around just as long as people have been alive. With storytelling came cultural and societal bonding. It was a way to educate, amuse, and pass on an experience in a person’s life. During the dark ages it was a way for the commoners who were illiterate could hear stories from the bible. It was also a way for Catholics to insure that the stories from the bible were told right to all Catholics. In the early Americas, many stories were recorded by Central American cultures in stone and on hides used as a form of paper. With these primitive forms that were not easy to distribute story were told and important news was spread word by mouth. Storytellers were a big part of the creation of Central America because when the Jesuits showed up there they felt all of the natives should be Christens. Most of the Catholics records of the culture of the Aztecs, Mayans, and related cultures were lost only what storytellers could remember was saved by telling everyone they could. Now we have a number of ways everyday people came be storytellers by stories we tell educate, amuse, and pass on an experience in a person’s life just like when it first started also we have comedians who entertain us.

A comdeian /  modarn day stortyteller Kevin James telling an entertaing stroy.

When you go and see a performance of a comedian / modern day storyteller can expect to be in a theater of some sort. Seats for the audience, a stage for which the comedian is on while telling his story / show, props might also be on stage but a lot of the time there is a small table with a cup or bottle of water on it for the comedian. A stool used for sitting or to help act out a part of a skit. Also in some way the performer will have a microphone on their body or in their hand so everyone can hear what is being spoken. Basically you just sit, watch and laugh as a storyteller gives you funny advice and entertaining stories about their life events or just funny stuff.

Here Kevin James is a clip from his "Sweat The Small Stuff" Comdey Central spot.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

A float commonly seen in the celebration with
                                                                                           people dancing and celebrating there

Carnival was originated by a celebration that the Romans started called Saturnalia. An in this Roman holidays masters would release there salves and let them dress in their clothes, eat their food, drink their wine and the masters would act like a slave for that day. So now it is carried down though many generations, races, and cultures who have each added a little bit of what they feel is a break from a year of good behavior.

An example of the decidinet costumes used by peformers dance in on and around the floats.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro Brazil takes place in 4 days 40 days before Easter. Starting on Saturday and ending on fat Tuesday also when it comes to Carnival it is a way for Brazilians to celebrate their culture. It consists of interactive floats, performers dancing on the floats, performers acting in unison in all directions of the street around the floats.
Music coming from the floats, applause and singing along with music. Crowds pond crowds of people arm to arm huddled around the streets to the floats pass by. All being judged by the performances they put out, the design of the floats, the originality of float concept, costumes, and music. Each item listed has its own category so one winner is picked for each and the grand prize best in show wins a very hefty prize money.

When you see a performance of Carnival in Rio de Janeriro some things to expect are to be standing somewhere in the Sambadrommo sound rounded by enthusiastic people. Loud music from floats and performers on the streets in and around the floats and the fans in the audience. A very festive live crazy fun party atmosphere, also judging of the floats on many characteristic some categorizes are is concept, music, performers, costumes, and float deigns.
